October 1, 2024
As of October 1, 2024, the FDA approved medications used for abortion care (mifepristone and misoprostol) are considered controlled substances in the state of Louisiana. This law does not make it a crime for pregnant people to possess or use abortion pills to end their own pregnancy. If you are not pregnant, possessing or having either medication without a prescription from a doctor will continue to be a crime, and may now result in a more severe punishment.

It is NOT a crime for pregnant people to possess abortion pills for their own use. But if you are not pregnant and do not have a prescription from a doctor licensed to practice in Louisiana, possessing abortion pills is a crime.
Self-managed abortion is not a crime in Louisiana. But what the law says and what happens in reality can be very different. If you have questions about your legal rights and risk, call 844-868-2812 or contact us through our secure form to speak with a lawyer.
